In my goal to complete as many O-Pee-Chee sets I today present to you the 1961 Topps CFL set.

Although it says Topps on the back, the “litho’d in Canada” is one of the major give away that O-Pee-Chee was likely involved.

At this time they would be simply reprinting Topps cards north of the border and it would be a couple more years until there was a real O-Pee Chee product (I like to think of the 1964 Topps Canada Outer Limits non sport as the first REAL O-Pee-Chee in it’s rebirth).

Another big flag that O-Pee-Chee is involved was that the subject was CFL football. I’m not sure how much of a market there would have been in the USA for these (although at that time in the 60’s there would have been some).

The fronts are simple, black and white. Mostly portraits likely from training camp.

The backs are similar to the 1961 Topps NFL backs with one key difference. Instead of stats there is a small blurb on the player in English and French.

The Topps back (below) included much more information/stats.

I’m well on my way with 1961 Topps CFL (O-Pee-Chee) 7/132 for 5.3%
